Island of the Blue Dolphins

I picked to read this chapter book because I enjoyed the story when I was younger and the whole situation amazes me. Karana, the main character, lives amongst the dogs in a cave on an island. She makes a life of her own after being stranded by her tribe. She makes friends with the women of the Aleut tribe after hiding from them. They teach each other their own languages and Karana recognizes how lonely she has been on the island by herself. Her dog eventually dies and she finds one that is his son. She takes him in and finally one day a boat comes to rescue her. The dog and her go back to be at her real home, even though she knows that her heart is on the island because that is where she was raised.

I enjoyed this chapter book because the girl had to survive on her own. She became the family of dogs and sought out goods in order to survive. It is a very adventurous story and is inspiring to know that a girl can survive in the wild.
